So it's official - Maximum build height has been increased to 256 (was 128)
- Empty sections of the world are not loaded into memory
- Block ids have been increased to 4096 (was 256) by adding a 4 bit data layer (similar to how meta data is stored)
- Block ordering have been changed from x/z/y to y/z/x in order to improve compression
- Packets for sending chunks have been updated (a full 128-high chunk is smaller than the old format, and a chunk with lots of empty space is much smaller)
- Biomes are saved per x/z column, which means they can be altered by tools
The next snapshot, and Minecraft 1.2, will automatically convert worlds to the new format. Awesome news for modders www.mojang.com/2012/02/14/new-minecraft-map-format-anvil/

Very. A lot of modpacks/mod users were limited by the number of block IDs. I'm glad they increased that. A lot of people were also upset at shifting biomes, because older maps were often ruined that way... like the pre-biome builds of Pokemon's Kanto region, or Hyrule from the NES Zelda. A lot of mappers will be happy with the biome chanes, as well as the height cap increase.
I saw on one of the coder's Twitter pages that they're completely redoing the animal AI now too.

I'm suprised someone hasn't started an "official" Block ID List, that modders can apply to use certain block ID's which are then reserved from other mods - would make inter mod compatibility a lot better and also help to move away from 3 different types of Tin + Copper you get with IC2, BC and Forestry (I Know Forge goes some way towards this..) but a set list saying "ok gold coins for currency will be block 3224, and this is the .png file to use.. so those coins could operate across LOTS of mods would be awesome.. !!

That was tried a LOOONG while back on the official forums. It didn't work though, because there are so many mods... and a lot of modders don't play well with others. There are also a lot of mods out there that require a lot of block IDs, and you'd have to hope that the person or people in charge of the list wouldn't be dicks about it and deny them IDs... or that modders wouldn't ask for way more than they actually needed.

I'll finally be able to use all the mods I want. Bomb the hell out of the Reficuls and the millenaire villages I happen to dislike with the planes mod. lol

Yeah, it is hard just getting a few modders to coordinate let alone everyone. Still, really looking forward to this.
