I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Eve-online. It's like an MMO for adults. When you lose in eve, you really lose, there's no restore from savegame or getting your goodies back, they're gone, and you need to rebuild stuff.
It sounds harsh at first, but there's nothing like REAL loss to get the adrenaline going when you get pounced on, and need to run away QUICK!
I played it for 2 years, and then fell out of love with it, and to be honest, I miss it too, and tried to get back into it, and can't generate a feeling of wanting to play again! Isn't that weird?

Eve online is too much of a grind, and you can't really do anything yourself unless you stay in Hi-sec all the time.
A similar style game (style in full loot concept at least) is Darkfall Online. Also a huge grind and it's full pvp, full loot, massive battles, etc. More of a fantasy setting than a space one. It was a good game for a while but then the grind got to me. If you can beat the grind you can have alot of fun with it.

I play: World of Tanks Skyrim (on xbox) Space Pirates and Zombies (you should check it out if you haven't, it's like 10 bucks on Steam) I want to play SWTOR so badly but my computer cannot run it so I need to get a new computer and that takes money:( Battlefield 3 (on xbox) Assassin's Creed: Revelations (on xbox) I have also played WoW but I quit about a year and a half ago. I was an "old-timer" on WoW. When paladins complained about how their buffs didn't last that long, I just told them that I played BEFORE paladins even had the 15 min Greater Blessings, they ONLY had the 5 min ones. My main was a Night Elf hunter, I loved playing her. I never really got into a guild that did hardcore raiding though so I didnt do a lot of the raids. I never even got a chance to beat Molten Core or Onyxia when those were the raids to beat. I played EVE for about 6 months but I hated how someone who had started 2 months before you would ALWAYS be more powerful than you due to the Real time skill training. (I don't like that system) I also play Star Trek Online because it is F2P, but I am only playing that to tide me over till I get a new computer to play SWTOR.

The problem with EVE is megacorps. You cannot compete. There's no point in playing. Also, as shadowscall says, the real-time skill training. Oldbies always win. (Of course, the World of Darkness MMO is going to probably have something similar, but they also will have a 1-human/1-vamp char limit and permadeath, so if you gang up and kill an oldbie, they're completely screwed... which I think balances that out pretty well. It also makes sense for vampires, and notsomuch for astronauts.)
Heh, yeah. My boyfriend told me about when pallies had to seal before every single judgement, and the entire system worked differently. I still won't play Cata. Some things look cool, but most if it looks just not worth it. Private servers for t3h winz.
I'm thinking about starting STO, because a friend of mine has been playing for awhile and wants me to play with him. Since I'm a trekkie and it's FtP, I can't really say no!
Man, Skyirim eats me alive. I'm playing on normal, and can't even get to the second town. I do not do combat so well. Bandits + me = CoconutJellySmear
Another friend of mine started playing Old Republic and really likes it. My boyfriend wants to play, and wants me to... but I'm not sure, just because I am not a Star Wars person. The universe does not make sense to me... and I know, Old Republic doesn't actually use canon, so it *does* make sense (I watched my boyfriend play the single-player)... but I'm not sure I want to deal with fanboys either. >.<
eeeeEEE! We're getting my real computer an ethernet cable, so it'll be able to internet! EQ2! I miss you so much...!

I liked EVE, and was in a very active Uber 0.0 Corp, but the problem is I don't have 3-6 hours at a time I can sit in a fleet, waiting for something to happen, and there is only so many asteroids you can sit and mine before going loopy (and yes I tried very hard )

haven't read all posts, but still will reply *evil laugh and childish giggling*: i played "baldur's gate 1 & 2 & ToB" "Icewind dale 1 & 2" "Neverwinter Nights 1" (which i made a high resoluted nudepatch for ) i used to play "Vietcong - Fist Alpha" or "Hidden & Dangerous 2" every evening with my friends in coop mode and on hardest difficulty with only one life and sometimes we did some roleplaying there. i sometimes play "Battlefield 2: Project Reality" and "Battlefield 2: Forgotten Hope 2" i loved to play the campaigns of "Halflife1&2", "F.E.A.R.", "Far Cry", the whole series "The Elder Scrolls", "Fallout 3", "The Witcher", "BioShock" oh, i just saw "Commandos - behind enemy lines" in my shelf. i loved that game back then... too bad its only working on "win 9x". erm, yes, i tried a few MMORPGs and while i love playing with many players, i HATE those games, as you never get ahead, there's never any real goal to achieve... no end. while thats the fascinating part, its also the part i got frustrated about after 7 days of playing.

No goal and can't win... And you play minecraft why??? yes, technically theres a way to win i certainly don't play for that reason. any more than i play a mmorpg to become max level or anything.

We're getting my real computer an ethernet cable, so it'll be able to internet! EQ2! I miss you so much...! 1. Permadeath in an MMO? I know some games with guilds that do that voluntarily, namely Dungeons and Dragons online, but a game that requires permadeath? I can see that being the cause of throwing many a stuffs against the wall and rage quitting because you just lost three months of work simply because you got zerged. 2. Yeah, I remember the whole pally seal thing. That was back when I barely started playing. However to compensate, the judgements were also alot more useful, and it was useful to keep your seal up and judge when you need to, rather than judging off cooldown like people do now. 3.The problem with private servers (used to be on one) is that they suck. The mechanics of the fight aren't the same because they need to be manually scripted by the person who wrote the repack for the server, since they dont have access to the actual legit server files. Some fights dont require alot of scripting, however there's some heavily scripted fights like Gunship in ICC is which rather fun when it works, but I've never heard of a private server with a working gunship battle. 4. Almost all games by perfect world inc (Which is what Star Trek Online is) eventually end up being a massive grind simply to reach the next level. I could be wrong about star trek having not played it before but with PW Inc's track record, I doubt it. 5.We'll need to talk about Skyrim sometime, I play everything on max difficulty, we need to see what the issue is. On a related note, all elder scrolls games are best on teh PC 6. And finally, alot of people from my old guild in WoW and a few people from my current guild have went off to play SW:TOR, with the following it's quickly gathered I have no doubt it's a great game. It's simply not the game for me.

A few private servers actually do have legit files. One of them actually sued Blizzard because they had bought a license to run a private server, and Blizz refused to give them the scripting for the Litch King. If I remember correctly, Blizz lost that one because the contract specified all code through WotLK. The problem I have with private servers is half the people don't speak english (which makes it hard to party) and the other half don't know how to play and refuse to learn. (Dude, you're a priest. You CAN NOT TANK. You're also the only heal class in this party. NO DPS 4 U.) The last one I played on was DethPod, and they're pretty damn good about having the scripted battles work. They have a few programmers who work on that full time, to keep things running. Yeah. I tried to play morrowind on the xbox... holy broken cookie, batman. sadface is in all lowercase letters because sad panda is sad. I just was not a PC gamer... and this whole using a keyboard instead of a controller still makes my hands cramp every once in awhile. My boyfriend's kinda got dibs on helping me out on Skyrim. He's trying to get me to play it, but he's also got a list of 10 other games and like 200 books he's trying to get me to read... I have a looooong todo list ahead of me.

[...] i wouldnt be able to play any first person (shooter) game on any controller like Playstation or XBox. there i have less motion control than with my mouse, also i have less keys for actions. it was a desaster when we tried to play Left4Dead2 on my brothers XBox. i had no problems with that game on PC.

Morrowind on the Xbox is still a great game, just the load times are killer if you're fast.
And you've stated another reason why retail servers are good. They recently released a looking for raid mode, in which you can get into a random 25 man raid for dragon soul, all of the bosses are easier, some are missing mechanics and such to compensate for the random factor. Drops 384 loot rather than 397 in normal mode. However when you go in there, very rarely are there bad people who don't know what they're doing.

See, I liked playing Left4Dead on the xbox. I haven't done it on the PC, but i'm one of those types who needs a controller. I seriously want one of those completely-wired xbox controllers because you can plug it into your pc as a joystick. Hell yes, and not only because I like running old NES emulators.

I am right there with you Coconut, using a controller feels natural to me, using keyboard and mouse is not. I use a wired one to play games on my PC every now and then. Also, I want a sequel to Star Wars: Republic Commando and Star Wars Battlefront 2, both for the original xbox. Those were FUN games.
