Well, i was hoping to hook together the warning bell with a door, so that the door would be open when there was no enemies around, is it just a matter of connecting the bell to the door? How do you make redstone wires go up vertically?

You can't make redstone go vertically without other mods. It's one of the major flaws with redstone that made me say "screw that" and move on to something else. (The other ones being: Redstone is programmed to behave differently when you're not looking at it, the directional rule that only takes 1 line to fix, it doesn't work at all like real electricity...)

you can make them go up or down in a 2x1 space, or you can go UP in a 1x1 space (block, torch, block, torch etc.

T B T B T BDDD (Input is here)
B is block, D is redstone dust, T is redstone torch.
It's essentially a series of inverters, so you might want to make sure the signal is not inverted from what you need, if it is, add an inverter somewhere along the line (DTBD Input needs to go through the block) or you can just add another layer to your tower
Of course, that's up vertically... Down vertically would look more like this
TBDD (Input is here) D BT _D TB D
It's still just a series of inverters, so the same note above applies.
