I assume as I haven't seen one out there.. there is no way to code an automatic mod installer programme (even if just for a particular mod) - so many people seem to be incapable of installing mods properly.. launching a mod with an auto-installer would be Awesome...

It would be nice if minecraft came with an included installer.

This is a good challenge for the community to make automatic installer As I know Milenaire has one.

Would save about 90% of the "Help me" threads too

Maybe, but I suspect it'd cause different "Help me" threads.
The main problem I see is if someone already has other mods installed. If someone wants to run MineColony with other mods, they'd have to install MineColony first (because the installer would have to force update Minecraft, and install ModLoader). Since installation order sometimes matters when running multiple mods, this can cause problems. I'm not expecting that everyone's going to read the instructions and warnings about this.
Also, my boyfriend tells me that it's not hard to do, *if* Minecraft is installed in a specific place... but I don't have Minecraft installed in the AppData folder. I have it elsewhere, so I can have a few copies with different mods.

Oooh Miss Curry... Can you post how to do that.. I'm running 1.8.1 at the moment, but would love to run a 1.9.5 version too to be able to play on my multiplayer server as well - without having to manually chop and change all the time

The multiple installs? portableapps.com/node/25222 I just install it once, and then copy the folder... faster than re-installing. Then I mod to my heart's content.

I really like this idea of an installer app. I think I'm going to do it. Here's what I'm thinking. Feel free to let me know your thoughts. It would work as a sort of complement to ModLoader -- in that, ModLoader was created to make modding easier for other devs and to help make different mods more stable and compatible with each other. Similarly, this installer would be created to help with not just installing, but also managing the mods you have installed (and not just MineColony). It would access various mod repositories for a listing of available mods that it could download on its own, as well as allow you to download one yourself and specify it. Where possible, it would also do its best to tell you if any of your installed mods have updates available. It would install ModLoader by itself and by default, when it's needed (which, as we know, is most of the time). It would do its best to install mods in the right order, but it would also allow you to reorder them in case it gets it wrong. And maybe it will even try to warn you of possible conflicts if it hits a given threshold of prediction. Some of these are very easy and some are rather difficult. It will most definitely be an iterative process and I'll appreciate all your input as I continue. I'll forewarn you however, that I don't have much free time, so it might take a while to get this ball rolling. One thing that I'm not quite sure about yet, is if it should be an external app that you have to manually run and it'll show you if your mods have updates available, etc., or if it should be a mod itself that runs in the main menu and can alert you immediately when it finds updates. The problem with the mod version is that it would require ModLoader to start with, and now you're already installing ModLoader and at least one mod on your own... So while it doesn't entirely defeat the purpose, as you can still have an easier time installing all future mods, it's still not ideal. Another solution I've considered is to make it an actual mod, but then make an external installer app that just installs ModLoader & my Installer Mod, and from then you can install/update other mods from the main menu. Maybe that would be most ideal. The goal here is to simplify the user's process of installing & dealing with mods as much as possible. Everyone! Let me know what you think! I'm rather fond of the direction this idea is going already, but at the core this project will be for all of you, so the way it works should be the way you would want it to. Give me your input!

I could swear there was something like this already.

That would make me sad, as I am looking forward to building it, but who knows... If it's not particularly great, maybe it'll just serve to give us more ideas.

There are mod managers out there. Go take a look; you might be able to do better.
