When I start a new map, I travel as far as I have to to find a large flat plain, with trees at the edge, as all the buildings work so much better on level ground.
I also like to remove any grass over time, as it gets on my nerves, but that could be OCD. :-)
How about a landscaper man, who levels the ground and clears grass etc.
Maybe he just concentrates on levelling anything that's higher or lower than his hut. If he has to fill in a hole, then he'd use dirt from his own stockpile to fill it, so there would be the cost? Maybe you could turn him on or off or set his area of work?
I don't know if it would make a dull featureless land, but I'm interested in case I'm the only one that does this?

I am just as insane anal OCD as you are Chrisbitz, but like Shadowscall said the builder works well enough for this. I still prefer doing my landscaping the old-fashioned way, with large amounts of ITNT (IC2) but that's just me Another thing I do is I have templates in MCEdit and I will survey an area and see how it is going to look, then drop torches or different colored wool blocks so I know what to build where (talk about OCD!) Actually my current game I decided to try to work within the contours of the land and it isn't going too bad, but I have to restrain the urge to start leveling everything in site (except the farm, be sure to level a good area around your farms).

what Minecraft is missing is bigger biomes by default. building a settlement inside a swamp biome is a pain in the a** just because the landmasses are so tiny. on other biomes its too many hills or too less trees around. if there were just plains big enough for a village and some trees around. like which forest you've ever seen is completely full of trees without any clearing? none. so its lacking the realism in landscape. but where do i get a new landscape algorythm mod? leveling evrything is dull and even a village may have some higher groudns and lower grounds, but just 1 or 2 blocks difference inbetween, not 6! if the landscape were some bit more constant and not walking 100 meters and having crossed the big desert to find an ice-desert or thickest jungle. just my two cents.

I feel your pain. Plains are worse now (for building), since they made hills occur in all biomes. Overall the world generation is better as far as variety, but worse for building towns. They still of course generate deserts right next to ice and swamps bleh. I'd like to see it done by temperature and rainfall, with an option for how far you want to spawn from the equator so you can play in the type of world you want AND have it randomly generated but that might be too much to ask.
There are some mods out there but so far it doesn't look like any that do what we want. Most people seem to like "extreme hills" and want more of them , me, I cringe when I see floating mountains.
So far the only generation mod I am using is flat bedrock, since that is one of my other pet peeves.
In the meantime, check out the seed I posted in the rc17 thread, granted the plains need some leveling still but it might suit you. There is taiga to the south (wood & snow) and swamps to the east (rubber trees for IC2) comprising your own beautiful 3 biome resort island. A mushroom island less than 1km from where you spawn and 2 large continents not too far away.

What I do is place my town hall at the highest hill (not mountain) and then build ramps out on a grid placing my homes in a street pattern. The builder will fill in the town above the uneven terrain below. I then add stares between every other set of houses to allow access to the Under Shelf as I call it. I'm then free to add mines and lumber jacks freely directly under their homes. This allows me to have a nice level residential district that is well lit and defended which mean no more creates from hunters/creeper attacks. The pathing is amazing, a few npc will fall (they will live) off if you don't build double wide stairs but other then that my people are safe and happy at night. With a finished city the stairs look like support beams holding your city above ground or you can wall in the Under shelf and have a city on a bluff. Rise Above and have fun
