Thoughts and Feelings about the Hunter.. What's good, what's not how he could be improved !!

I like the hunter, but there are a couple of Issues Big one is how he handles the Creepers, or rather how his dogs trigger them.. Simple solution would be to not send the dogs after creepers, just keep them for Zombies, Skeletons, Spiders.. Also when he engages an Enderman, the EM teleports, and the Hunter WALKS off after them, ignoring any other mobs he might pass... Suggest the hunter has a regular proximity ceck and swaps to the nearest targets if possible. The Hunter needs a variable strength based on the difficulty you play... I was playing on Hardcore, and a single Zombie beat the Hunter (No dogs) in a 1 on 1 fight... that's not good - At least make it so he maybe needs swords (I know he uses a bow..) and the quality of the sword dictates his strength... Wood/Stone = Normal Mode Iron = Hard Mode Gold+ = Hardcore Mode. Also give us the ability at least to toggle "use dogs" on or off at his chest ? One AWESOME feature would be if the Hunter reacted to Warning Bell alarms... If a creature triggers the bell, the Hunter RUNS to that location and engages...

Hunter is next to useless, because of the creeper issue he causes more harm than good.
I know Scot said in the other thread he was doing baker/lumberjack/hunter/barracks but at this point I'd say skip him and go to the barracks.
How the guards get handled is going to determine the hunters future I think anyway.
Forgetting mods like Mo creatures (and I am about at the end of my patience with it), there isn't much point to the hunter as he is once guards are added unless the guards are going to only work during the day.
Really what needs to be added to make the hunter useful would be game animals (deer) that he would go out and hunt during the day. At a minimum making the women non-aggressive so that there would be pigs, cows and chickens for him to go hunt (at least until he massacred all the local animals). That is another issue which is a side effect of how spawns are handled now. While the lumberjack and farmer work with renewable resources and the miner while finite has a very long span the hunter can clear the area very quickly.
Having him continue to hunt monsters doesn't really make much sense since what are the guards for then?

I worked on the hunter over the weekend. As i mentioned somewhere else, i fixed the creepersafetyrange, but haven't tested it. When a creeper spawned inside a house and the hunter went right after him, i knew it wasn't working. Hunter still has problem with close fighting. But distance fighting its almost cheating now. He now knows when he hits with his arrows, and when he does he stops moving forward and shoots again. So in open areas he just stands there and shoots creepers/zombies/spiders to death. Well out of their range. He only sends in the dogs when the monster is at a range of 5 or less. usually the creeper is hurt by then and the dogs can kill it before it blows up. I also borrowed about 5 lines of audio dialog from another game (don't tell anyone) and gave it to the hunter. He still is doomed to obscurity when the guards come out, but i wanted to work on him a little.

It would be nice to find some way to keep him gainfully employed. Also for 1.2 if you give him a cat it will keep the creepers away I've been playing with 12w06 (avoid 7b, the bugs are too severe) and let me tell you the new mob AI is a big improvement. I have been getting my ass handed to me. I don't know how the dogs have fared with improvements since I havent been able to find any yet. They don't seem to be spawning in taiga anymore and I am getting a ton of desert and jungle biomes. Ok, so I sailed about a KM to a goodsized taiga & forest continent and was able to find wolves (getting them back home was another ordeal). So they don't attack creepers anymore. They also aren't up your ass constantly like they used to be. So all in all the dogs in the future might actually be useful. Anywho, since you are dinking around with the hunter might be worth your while to decompile 12w06 or 7b and have a look at the new code for them (again I'm still assuming your dogs are more or less vanilla...you never have confirmed nor denied). Also keep your dogs and cats (and women...) away from your sheep and chickens. I don't remember tamed dogs killing sheep before but then I didn't bother much with them.

Dogs are mostly vanilla. I had to change the code to allow them to follow the hunter, and to report any attacks to the hunter. But its 90% vanilla.
What is the improved part? The moving around obstacles? The breaking down of doors?

I haven't seen them break down doors (wouldnt want them to anyway) Pathing is improved. They ignore creepers and creepers ignore them. While they still bump you from time to time they aren't constantly pushing you, they give you some space when possible. It is basicly small, subtle stuff but that is the difference between them annoying you to death and being a useful companion.
I bred some puppys and even running around with 6 dogs and 4 cats they managed to not be in my way constantly.
I may actually start using them regularly myself.

You said that the mob AI was improved, and you had your ass handed to you. I was asking about the hostile mob AI, not the dogs...
For example, i hear that zombies can knock down wooden doors now. I would be scared except that its too easy to get into bed before they spawn.

I think they only break down doors on hard and hardcore mode.

Would have been pretty bad for me if I was on hard then too since there were creepers hanging out with them. Will be interesting to see if the zombies start going after Minecolony people. I was on w07 for a bit and didn't realize the lighting bug for what it was so mobs were actually spawning where they shouldn't. I thought they were just being super ninjas. That and the skeletons were doing way too much damage. Have reverted to w06 and it's all normal, but the mobs are still a bit smarter so it makes it more enjoyable. Definitly good to keep 2 cats with you (since they tend to wander a bit) because the creeper will go running, you go running after him and the cat might be off smelling flowers and the creeper will turn around and go boom.
