As with 1.1 with 1.2 during the early days when most mods haven't updated or I am waiting for my favorites I tend to try out other mods that I might not normally use because of conflicts or that I was already using a similar mod.
So far WMLL has gotten quite a bit of use. Normally I would use ingameinfo but Daftpv hasn't been much for updating his mods lately. WMLL is updated for even weekly builds. It has actually gotten a lot better.
I would keep it over ingameinfo at this point except that I decided to give CJBs modpack a shot since he updated early and I like it a lot also (one of the mods is basicly the same). I use everything but the minimap (still using Rei's). That is a mod that also looks like it has improved a lot as it is now modular. Almost everything is configurable from ingame. I believe it was not forge compatible before which was probably why I didnt use it. We'll see how it works when the forge mods get updated.
TMI of course is also updated much more frequently than NEI, but it still gets shelved in between for NEI.
Terraria Trees V4 is a new surprise. Since timber! , treecapitator and nature overhaul haven't been updated yet and I am already sick of chopping down trees through the weekly updates it was a high priority replacement. I think this one will be the new keeper though. You don't even need an axe (so custom axes should work in theory) you can actually dig the block of dirt out below the tree and that will knock it down. I don't play SMP myself but the fact that the mod is SMP is still bonus (who knows Minecolony may be SMP someday too) If someone could find a way to cause instant leaf decay dropping saplings and apples as well that is really all that is left to be desired.
Daylight burns creepers is a nice new addition, since while I won't get rid of them (like I said in another thread here) but I do like being able to get an early morning start and not worry about them.
Finder Compass is another mod I picked up recently. Configurable. Very nice. Makes the compass actually good for something. By default it finds diamonds, chests and mobspawners. It can get a little cluttered, but you can set it for pretty much what you want and turn the rest off. Right now I've got it set just to find valuable ores at fairly close range. Does make mining easier (and I'm so spoiled with Minecolony, IC2 and BC that I dont do veyr much of my own mining these days).
