Ok, I think i've worked out what makes the miner decide to dig outside his house...
I was keeping an eye on my miner earlier, and he decided to go back up to his chest, so I followed him.. I couldn't get out of the tunnel from behind him.. He then tried to come down as I was trying to get out.. after a couple of seconds of bouncing off each other he gave up and moved back.. I then got out of the tunnel.. He obviously decided his tunnel was blocked, and moved about 10 blocks OUTSIDE his hut and is now as we speak starting to dig a new tunnel down (to the diamond mines)
Recall to chest doesn't reset him to use his original tunnel...

Ok, followed him down his new path and confirm he is trying to dig down to his original mining spot... strange method of doing so, he even dug a 2x1 VERTICAL shaft about 12 blocks down to get there

The gravel is a known bug, and already fixed.
negative inventory is a new one however.

BTW Once he has dug his new shaft down to his original tunnel he can start using the original access again..

Regarding negative inventory.. I have noticed that if the miner mines a lot of one item in a single go, he only ever says he has a max of 63 of an item.. However back at the chest he will put the current (or I assume correct as it's more than 63) NUMBER OF ITEMS IN THE CHEST.. i WONDER IF THIS COULD CAUSE THE NEGATIVE INVENTORY GLITCH?? Ooops sorry caps Not sure it will though as I got a negative inventory on the iron ore, and he didn't have more than the 63 in that run??

I stopped my miners from digging above ground by opening up a room the size of their hut, 7x7 and 3 deep. Then put a stair well next to the wall into the room. After I did that he stayed underground. Once you glitch him though you have to reset the day to get him to reset or he'll keep trying to mine outside....or you could just kill him and let someone else take over his role.
I also put wood planks under the grass around the huts so they arnt as eager to mine outside, though they will dig through the planks if they glitch out again.
