Miners get confused when they are walking on a designated road block while in their mine. A quick fix is to use double slabs.
The data value for double slabs is 43. This will make all double slab blocks classified as roads. Inputting 43:0-5 will not make a specific type of double slab the road.
Gravel, dirt, grass, cobblestone, stone, and sand/sandstone should not be used as a road due to the fact that miners and woodcutters will become confused and stop working when they come into contact with it.
If you are near the Taiga or Tundra biome, you could use Snow blocks as roads. The Data value for Snow Blocks is 80. Light sources will not melt snow blocks, and Snow Blocks can be placed in any other biome, including the desert.
Another solution which the devs may or may not be looking into is creating a road block.
Keep up the work devs!

Ok, I'd like to add the Town Hall to the list of nuisances. My builder and lumberjack both went through the Town Hall and got stuck trying to get to their destination. However, could it be possible their getting stuck because my road is cobblestone?

Long distance pathing is dumb right now. They're working on it. I personally prefer to use non-building materials for my paths so I don't confuse the AI.

I chose cobblestone because its what he has on hand. He sometimes has dirt but not that often. i don't want to just create dirt out of thin air if i can help it. its a form of cheating i want to avoid.
The usual spiralling at the bottom doesn't usually break the stairs, i'll have to give the miner another look later on, have one more other pc to create first...
The miner has 0 range, if its not next to him, he won't see it. He isn't meant to be more efficient than you. Hes supposed to free you up to do other things.
That being said, hes a little better in rc20. I re-added looking at the diagonals which helps somewhat.

Actually, I found the problem. My roads were cobblestone, thus, whenever he walked on cobblestone, he would become confused. Same thing when he walks on gravel when it's the road. ... The Road Block is a good idea! Probably easy to do as well. So maybe we'll see it... That would fix my problem. However, instead of 3x3 of stone like the guy suggested, I was thinking 3x1 of gravel. And maybe, just maybe, be able to edit the properties file to change the texture to any existing texture, like cobblestone or gravel (Gravel by default of course). That way, when we upgrade our town, we could go in and change our road so that it is consistant with the upgrades. Just imagine the illusion of a Diamond road...

I Use double-stone-slabs are my road block, for aesthetic reasons. They do seem to work well, though: double-slabs don't appear appear naturally in the game, or even as a result of normal building work very often. Once O started using my double-slab roads the citizens got lost a lot less often.

Once O started using my double-slab roads the citizens got lost a lot less often. Hmm, does double slab count as a different block than single slab? If not, I'd rather make a Single Slab road, that way 3 cobblestone blocks gives me a 2x3 road piece. Hmm... going to try this out... Edit: So yeah, double slabs is 43, and single slabs is 44. So Wood, Cobblestone, Stone, and Sandstone slabs will all be a road if you designate slabs as the road. I think I'm going to do Double Slabs just because single slabs might be used in construction and I don't want to risk my dumb villagers' life on that risk, lol Edit 2: Don't use single slabs, villagers will constantly jump.

I just tested using 43:3 to see if I can make only cobblestone double slabs the road, but it doesn't work. However, just using 43 makes it so you can use any type of road. This makes it interesting where the poverty district gets sandstone roads, and the wealthy district gets brick roads! They need to make diamond slabs...

don't know if it was fixed in the recent update or not, but my villagers don't jump when using single slabs for roads.

Hmm, maybe it's because I had my single slabs below ground level rather than above. They were probably jumping because the ground around the sidewalk. I just don't like the fact of roads being higher than houses and such.

my halfslabs are also below ground level. though my roads are 2-3 blocks wide, and they tend to walk in the middle of the path. so if they are jumping due to the sides being half a block higher, having wider roads fixes it.
