1st these guys look great. Can't wait to try them out! I do have a couple of question on these new troops. 1. Do they replace the hunter? If not, what is the difference between the 2? 2. Maybe I missed this in the details, but do citizens become guards on their own or when a tower box is built?

Guards are not normal workers - citizens don't become guards - they just spawn at the barracks. - build barracks - guards will spawn there (higher level barracks = higher guards limit) - build tower - guards will be transfered from there from barracks

Regarding the Hunter
The Hunter will only work at night, whereas the guards work 24/7
As such the guards do make the hunter obsolete, although the default settings is the hunter will attack creepers but the guards won't (configurable in the minecraft.properties)
generally the hunter is obsolete now..

Do the Guards collect drops from the mobs? My understanding was that the function of the Hunter was to kill mobs (hostile and neutral) for their drops, whereas the function of the Guards was just to kill hostile mobs, for protection.

Guards don't pick things up no... The females should IF they path over it though..

If anything, the hunter should be killing the peaceful creatures, (deer/rabbits/birds), or the things that are hostile at night only (beers, scorpions, spiders) and let the guards take on the truly high priority hostiles.
My plan was to give the hunter sheers, but really i should be giving it to the citizens or some other worker.

If you ever get this mod to the point where it goes multiplayer with multiple colonies.. Make the hunter have a KOS list, where you can put in other players names for the Hunter and his dogs to attack - that would be awesome

He's just not contributing to the community.. might be the map I'm playing now, I set up in a bad spot and the wildlife might be spawning further than the hunter's range
