The farmer produces wheat in the same way a player would. He uses a hoe and shovel, which you need to supply. He tills the land himself, plants seeds and irrigates (you dont need to supply water or seeds), and then harvests the wheat when it's fully grown. Might take a while for the wheat to fully grow, so you'll need to be patient.

If you're having a hard time feeding your villagers, grow your own crops to supplement his. In the future, have a working farm *before* getting a farmer. He'll move things around, but he'll work just fine there, if you place his chest in the middle.

Try clearing out the snow from the farming area, I've heard that snow often causes problems.

Have you given him tools yet? He needs a shovel and a hoe before he can work.

The mod is god. However some bugs do exist.
Several times, the farmer disappeared and left unproductive field.. This afternoon, I found the farmer would like to keep wounded in the water when he tried to jump to the field and failed..I don't why because I run my game in the peaceful model... Other bugs, I have got the answer from the forum..:-)

I tried something last night with the farmer... He seems to chew through hoes and shovels pretty quickly (stone ones) - I left 3 or 4 of each in his chest, and left the game running overnight (with me in a safe brightly lit room I might add ) Came back in the morning to find around 20 stacks of 64 wheat in the chest.... now given he chewed through about a dozen tools in the first hour after the building was placed.. I was really surprised, and a bit confused Is this due to once the land is tilled, and water planted etc, there is no need to use a hoe/shovel to plant or harvest a seed? - therefore tools are only required for maintenance if the land gets trodden on too much??

Pretty much. Have you made yourself a farm in MineCraft? The hard part is setting it up... other than that, it's just waiting for the seeds to grow.
