Nope, not some other weird mod with ants. I've decided to do this on a new world to test the challenges and bugs of building your village completely underground.
Why would I do this? Well, I think that having options to how to play Minecolony makes it all the better. Want a new challenge? No problem, there's no sunlight underground, plus you can't immediately tell between day and night.
After a while I'll let everyone know my thoughts on this method of playing, anyone who wishes to try it out too is more than welcome to

sounds like fun. Actually, it reminds me of Nuclear Apocalypse Challenge. Somewhere in the thread (or is it the Solar Apocalypse thread?) someone talked about an extra challenge of getting an npc mod and saving 30 people in an underground bunker.

So far I've noticed two things that make this alot more challenging. First is the darkness factor, so stock up on A LOT of torches. Second is the lava factor. Most of minecolony's buildings are made of wood. You'll likely have to build a wall around a lava infested build, wait for the fires to eat everything, then try your best to fix the lava problem... So far EVERY BUILDING I've made has hit lava >.< However there are some benefits. Since everything is lit up, you have little chance of mobs invading your village (Unless you get lucky like I did and build your village in a slime chunk. I've got slimes totally invading my town hall. I'm pretty sure the big slime is the overlord of the entire village now.) Also if you're vigilant, you can find diamonds that your builder uncovers while clearing out space for the buildings. You've got to be quick about it though, because if he gets to it before you do, it's gone. Builders dont care about diamonds, might as well be dirt to him. The miner is actually capable of mining bedrock Unfortunately at the bedrock level, without an upgraded hut, he seems to be pretty bugged out. Wont mine a thing... So far he's mined more of his building and bedrock than anything useful, I'd suggest putting the miner higher up than the bedrock level. It now appears that my miner has dug straight through all the layers of bedrock and has fallen into the void. For an underground tree farm, you'll need a direct path to sunlight (which kinda defeats the purpose of everything being underground) Or you'll need lots of bone meal. Saplings will pop off the block they're on if they dont get bonemeal in time, but tree that have already grown will remain. So in order for your lumberjack to be effective, you'll need to be around as much as possible.

What? Every tree farm I've ever had has been underground. If they're popping off, it means they don't have enough light. You *have* to put a torch literally right next to the sapling.

Hm, not right next to every sapling, I'll try that though

Seems like my lumberjack and my farmer want nothing more than to try everything in their power to get to the surface, even though there are trees and farmland right next to them
Maybe it's just that being this deep messes with the AI of the workers somehow.

Their AI probably tells them that they fell into a cave...

I noticed that when I made a second layer of the tree farm, the lumberjack took to that one, but at that same level the farmer was still buggy

I'm really interested in trying this out too. It's such a neat idea! I love the idea of having a secret colony deep underground, with a hidden entrance made out of pistons.

For those reading this post and haven't seen my atlantis post yet, I'd think it's safe to say that the lumberjack does work underground, just not at bedrock level or slightly above it. The farmer however doesn't work at all under anything other than glass, he needs the surface to work.
